Domain Transfer Process

To transfer a domain to our system in order to avoid needlessly high renewal fees, this is the sequence of steps. A domain transfer typically takes 7-10 days, but can take much longer depending upon the other registrar.

Warning!!! If you are a customer of Network Solution's "Dot Com Biz Card" program,
CLICK HERE and read this information BEFORE you try to transfer your domain.

And another warning...! Both Register.com and Network Solutions have added an additional transfer confirmation step. You will first receive via email the confirmaiton instructions identified in paragraph #4 below. Then these registrars will send you an ADDITIONAL email with more instructions. You only have a limited time to follow their instructions, and they have been known to "neglect" to act upon the confirmations they receive.... This is regretably beyond our control. It actually appears that they are trying to delay transfer processing until the domain expires, at which time the customer has no choice but to renew through them. Hmmm. Is that nice?

  1. The domain to be transferred cannot have already expired. Ideally at least a week of registration time should remain before expiration.

  2. The domain to be transferred must have been originally registered at least 60 days before the transfer request is submitted.

  3. Customer completes the transfer form

  4. An email is sent to customer (admin contact) asking for confirmation of desire to change registrar. Note that this email can ONLY be sent to the email address on file with the existing registrar. If the admin email address on record with the existing registrar is not accurate, the administrative contact must notify the original registrar, and update the email address before the transfer is initiated. Otherwise the transfer will fail.

  5. Customer confirms the transfer request by going to the specified URL and entering the password given in the above email.

  6. Other registrar reviews transfer request and confirmation.

  7. We review the transfer request.

  8. Other registrar transfers domain.

  9. Other registrar sometimes still sends out a renewal bill (NetSol frequently does this).

  10. Customer gets nervous.

  11. Customer looks up domain in whois to make double-sure that domain has been transferred.

  12. Customer shreds bill with relief, and with feelings of disgust at other registrar.

The only cost involved is a renewal of one registration-year. This renewal is added on to whatever time remains on the current registration, so no time is forfeited. This means that many of our customers transfer their domain even long before renewal is imminent, just to avoid problems if the other registrar is unduly slow (certain ones are notorious for taking weeks to months rather than days).

Transfer failures will result in a payment refund to you, EXCEPT that if a transfer fails due to an invalid administrative contact email address, failure of the administrative contact to respond to the confirmation email, or violation of the limitations specified above, the refund will be less a $5.00 administrative charge. Initiation of a transfer order constitutes acceptance of these terms.

Please note that Register.com has been rather "difficult" to deal with recently. Frequently they do not respond to the transfer request at all, and simply let the transfer order "time-out." If this occurs, we will re-initiate the transfer for you, as it usually goes through on the second attempt. It may be useful to fax them a signed note tellin them that you are transfering the domain(s), instructing them to transfer the domain as per your order, in accordance with ICANN regulations.
